About the Artist

Emma Lewis Mitchell is the daughter of perhaps the most famous of all the Acoma potters, Lucy M. Lewis. Born in 1931, Emma learned the art of pottery making from her mother; today, Emma is respected as one of the best Southwestern potters. Her pots are known for their fine thin walls and elegant painting style.

Emma has won awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market. Her work has been exhibited at the Albuquerque Museum and at theTaipei International Exhibition of Traditional Arts & Crafts, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei, Taiwan, as well as other fine museums and art shows around the country. Her pots are made using the traditional methods of her ancestors: she gathers her own clay, collects natural pigments for her paints, and uses a yucca brush to paint her striking designs.
